What is NOT happening in town?

Giorgos Gounalakis writes…..

I would like to say a few things regarding my town.

Walking along the seafront, it really grieves me to see the state of it. I cannot imagine that in a tourist town such as Agios Nikolaos, the seafront, in other words, the diamond of the town is in this appalling condition. I won’t say before the start of the tourist season, because for me, Agios Nikolaos should be alive both in the summer and the winter.

Under no circumstances, do I want to hear the “fairy story” about the conflicting areas of responsibility, between the Council and the Harbour Fund, as that has now eclipsed.

Railings in poor state of repair, cables everywhere, outdated lighting, paving that hasn’t been maintained, gardens abandoned, bench seating nearly non-existent. What else would we have to see, in order to comment?

The town is a tourist area and is in competition with other tourist destinations. In competition means that it must improve it’s tourist product every year. However, I have walked the seafront since I was at school in 1984 and up until 2017, I have not seen the tiniest change, or if I have, it’s been a change for the worse.

Because I travel all over the world for business, I am lucky enough to see what other tourist destinations do and I am simply grieved. Just recently, I was in Pesaro, in Italy and despite my very short stay, I admired the small Italian town on the Adriatic coast, with a network of pavements and bike lanes, with an organised beach and of course, with a Council that cares for everything, so that the town is friendly and welcoming for every single visitor.

And us here, why?

Are we NOT interested? We DON’T want to? We DON’T know how?
