Mayor’s Union of Crete meets to discuss refugee arrivals

In a meeting of all the Mayors of Crete, which took place in Maleme, Chania, the subject of the refugees who are planned to be temporarily re-homed in Crete, was the main area of discussion.

In the coming week, the final signatures are expected to be put to agreements between the organising body and property owners who have offered to provide accommodation available.

The President of the Union of Mayors and Mayor of Heraklion, Mr. Vasilis Lambrinos reported that the arrival of the refugees on Crete will be gradual and they will be allocated to the 60 homes in Heraklion, 25 in Chania, 20 in Rethymnon and 20 in Lasithi, that have previously been agreed.

The total numbers of arrivals, is estimated to be approximately 700, but without fixed dates having been announced.

The discussion continued, in terms of how each Municipality would handle the issues and difficulties already seen in some cases, of implementing the whole project.
